In 1969, the Wenwu Temple was once again reconstructed into a grand Chinese Northern-style architecture. The main hall, known as the “Da Cheng Hall,” features a bronze-cast seated statue of Confucius, making it the only temple in Taiwan with such a sacred representation of Confucius. In addition to the statue of Confucius, there are also statues of Mencius and Zisi. Flanking the temple’s front plaza are two enormous vermilion-colored stone lions that capture the attention of visitors.

Situated with its back against the mountains and facing the lake, the Temple of Literature and War possesses magnificent terrain and offers breathtaking scenery. It serves as the spiritual center for the nearby residents, attracting a constant flow of worshippers. If you ascend to the rear hall’s viewing platform, you can enjoy a distant view of Sun Moon Lake.

Ci’en Pagoda is a famous landmark at Sun Moon Lake, and the distance from the parking lot to the end of the trail is approximately 570 meters. Along the way, you’ll be surrounded by lush greenery, making even the hot summer days feel pleasant as you walk along the wide path. Located atop Shabalan Mountain, also known as Erlong Mountain, at an elevation of 954 meters, Ci’en Pagoda stands 46 meters tall, with its top exactly at an altitude of 1,000 meters. It was built by Chiang Kai-shek in 1969 in memory of his mother, Madame Wang, and was completed in 1971.

Standing at the top of the pagoda, you’ll have a panoramic view. Looking towards the lake, you can see that the lake’s shape resembles the sun in the northeast and the moon in the southwest, explaining the origin of the name “Sun Moon Lake.” After taking in the 360-degree panoramic views along the railing, when you face west to find Lalu Island on the lake’s surface, you’ll notice that the pavilion on the Hanbi Peninsula across the lake, Lalu Island, Xuanzang Temple, and our location at Ci’en Pagoda all align perfectly on the same axis.

6. Explore Ita Thao Pier

The name of Ita Thao Pier is derived from the language of the Thao tribe. “Thao” means human and “Ita Thao” means “We are human. In ancient times, it was one of the most populated tribes around Sun Moon Lake. Now it has become a commercial street where you can find aboriginal cuisine and indigenous food. The Nian Ji Bao stuffed with shiitake mushrooms and cabbage is one of the must-try delicacies. Inside the Bao, you’ll find plenty of cabbage and locally grown shiitake mushrooms from Nantou. After frying, adding a bit of spicy sauce results in a delicious dish with a mouthwatering aroma. Fan Fan Chicken Wings provides chicken wings in which the bones are removed and stuffed with plenty of Shao tribe rice, allowing you to enjoy the aroma of both chicken meat and rice together when you eat them. Dong Dong Guabao replaces the traditional guabao bun with tofu skin. After cutting the tofu skin in half, it is filled with braised pork, pickled vegetables, crushed peanuts, and cilantro, making it a creative Taiwanese burger.
