Taipei Zoo and Maokong Gondola Itinerary

To make the most of your day trip, we recommend starting with a visit to the Taipei Zoo in the morning. Due to its vast size and diverse exhibits, exploring the zoo can be quite energy-intensive. Moreover, Maokong Gondola opens till the evening, so you can spend more time at the zoo if you want. However, if you prefer to experience the Maokong Gondola first and enjoy the scenic views before diving into the zoo’s attractions, feel free to swap the order. Here’s our suggested itinerary:

  • Morning: Visit Taipei Zoo (3-4 hours)
  • Afternoon: Take the Maokong Gondola (1-2 hours)
  • Explore Maokong: Enjoy the scenic views, visit tea houses, or embark on a short hike (1-2 hours)
  • Evening: Relax and enjoy a delicious dinner at a local restaurant (optional)

Best Time to Visit

While Taipei Zoo and Maokong Gondola is open year-round, the ideal time to visit is during the shoulder seasons of spring (March to May) or autumn (September to November) when the weather is pleasant and crowds are smaller. Avoid weekends and holidays as local families often flock to the zoo and gondola on these days. For Maokong Gondola, you might want to pick a clear, sunny day for the best view of the city.

Summer can be quite hot and humid, causing some animals to seek shelter from the heat. However, this season also offers a variety of special events and activities for kids on summer break. If you do visit during the summer, be sure to stay hydrated, wear sunscreen, and take frequent breaks.

Winter can be a pleasant time to visit Taipei Zoo, with mild temperatures and fewer crowds. As long as you avoid rainy days, you should still have a great experience. Keep in mind that some animals may go to rest earlier in the winter due to shorter daylight hours.

That being all seasons and months in Taiwan has different things to offer, there is no best time.

Visiting Taipei Zoo

Founded in 1907, Taipei Zoo, is one of the oldest and largest zoos in Asia. Locals might also refer to its old name, Muzha Zoo. With a mission to conserve wildlife, educate the public, and promote environmental awareness, the zoo has become a beloved attraction for both locals and tourists. Spanning over 64 hectares (158 acres), Taipei Zoo is home to a diverse collection of over 190 species.

Most Efficient Taipei Zoo Route

Utilize the Zoo Shuttle Train

Given the hilly terrain of Taipei Zoo, a fully foot-powered exploration can be quite tiring. To make your visit more enjoyable, consider taking the zoo train up to the “Bird World Station.” From there, you can gradually make your way down.

  • First way is to start at the “Taiwan Animal Area” or the “Koala Bear Exhibit” located on both sides of the main zoo entrance. After visiting the initial exhibits, head to the “Shuttle Train Station” near the Koala Bear Exhibit. Take the zoo train up to the “Bird Garden Station.”
  • Second way is to take the Maokong gondola straight to “Taipei Zoo South Station” then enter from the south zoo entrance. There, you can take the zoo train from “Taipei Zoo South Station” up to “Bird World Station”. We recommend doing this if you have an unlimited Maokong Pass.
  • After that, you can visit exhibits like the “Bird World,” “Amphibians and Reptiles House,” “Temperate Animal Area,” and the “Penguin House.” If you have more time and energy, you can continue to explore the “African Animal Area,” “Tropical Rainforest Area,” “Pangolin House,” and the ever-popular “Giant Panda House.”
  • Note that there are no direct zoo trains between Shuttle Train Station and Taipei Zoo South Station. There is only service between Taipei Zoo South Station ↔ Bird World Station and Bird World Station ↔ Shuttle Train Station.

Planning Ahead

Given the zoo’s vast size, it’s almost impossible to see everything in a single visit. To make the most of your time, discuss with your travel mates or children beforehand and decide on the top three animals they’d like to see. This will help you create a more focused and enjoyable experience. Remember, the zoo is a place for fun and relaxation. Don’t feel pressured to see everything in one day. Leave some animals for your next visit!
