Moreover, Maokong Gondola opens till the evening, so you can spend more time at the zoo if you want. However, if you prefer to experience the Maokong Gondola first and enjoy the scenic views before diving into the zoo’s attractions, feel free to swap the order. Here’s our suggested itinerary:
- Morning: Visit Taipei Zoo (3-4 hours)
- Afternoon: Take the Maokong Gondola (1-2 hours)

- First way is to start at the “Taiwan Animal Area” or the “Koala Bear Exhibit” located on both sides of the main zoo entrance. After visiting the initial exhibits, head to the “Shuttle Train Station” near the Koala Bear Exhibit. Take the zoo train up to the “Bird Garden Station.”
- Second way is to take the Maokong gondola straight to “Taipei Zoo South Station” then enter from the south zoo entrance. There, you can take the zoo train from “Taipei Zoo South Station” up to “Bird World Station”. We recommend doing this if you have an unlimited Maokong Pass.
- After that, you can visit exhibits like the “Bird World,” “Amphibians and Reptiles House,” “Temperate Animal Area,” and the “Penguin House.” If you have more time and energy, you can continue to explore the “African Animal Area,” “Tropical Rainforest Area,” “Pangolin House,” and the ever-popular “Giant Panda House.”
- Note that there are no direct zoo trains between Shuttle Train Station and Taipei Zoo South Station. There is only service between Taipei Zoo South Station ↔ Bird World Station and Bird World Station ↔ Shuttle Train Station.

Maokong Gondola Stations
The Maokong Gondola, stretching 4.03 kilometers, is Taipei’s first aerial cable car system. A single trip takes about 20 to 30 minutes and features four stations for passengers to board and alight: Zoo Station, Zoo South Station, Zhinan Temple Station, and Maokong Station.
Zoo Station is the most convenient starting point for those coming from the city center. Simply take the Wenhu Line of the Taipei Metro to the final stop, “Zoo Station,” and follow the signs to the gondola station.
Zoo South Station is the first stop after Zoo Station. It serves as a convenient transfer point for visitors who have finished exploring the Taipei Zoo and wish to continue their journey to Maokong via the gondola. If you follow our itinerary, you should board on this station.
Zhinan Temple Station is the second stop on the line. We highly recommend stopping here to explore this historic temple and its peaceful surroundings.
