Resource: Yangmingshan National Park

Just north of Taipei’s bustling cityscape lies a surprising escape: Yangmingshan National Park. This volcanic playground boasts a dramatic landscape sculpted by fiery eruptions millions of years ago. Dormant giants like Qixing Mountain pierce the sky, while wispy steam rises from fumaroles – vents spewing volcanic gases – hinting at the park’s simmering past.

But Yangmingshan isn’t just about geology. It’s a seasonal spectacle for flower enthusiasts. Spring explodes with a mesmerizing display of cherry blossoms, while summer sees hydrangeas paint the hillsides in vibrant hues. Year-round, calla lilies flourish at Zhúlìhú (Bamboo Lake), a serene crater lake surrounded by colorful flower farms. Autumn brings a fiery display of reds and oranges, while winter offers a tranquil escape with mountains veiled in mist.

Hikers can explore diverse trails, encountering wildlife and enjoy panoramic vistas. For a more relaxed pace, stroll along Zhúlìhú or the otherworldly Qīngtiān Gāng, where vast grasslands sprawl over volcanic rock formations.

Adding to the park’s allure are its natural hot springs, a result of the volcanic activity below. These luxurious retreats offer the perfect way to unwind and soak in the naturally heated mineral waters amidst breathtaking scenery. So, ditch the city noise and discover Yangmingshan National Park – a volcanic gem waiting to be explored, right on Taipei’s doorstep.

Features of Yangmingshan National Park

Volcanic Wonders

Yangmingshan National Park boasts Taiwan’s only active volcanic landscapes. Its young age (Quaternary Period) means remarkably preserved volcanic features.

resource: ezTravel

The Datun Volcanic Group showcases a variety of formations: layered stratovolcanoes, volcanic domes, and lava flow terraces. Evidence of ongoing activity includes fumaroles, sulfur vents, hot springs, and the ever-heating magma chamber below.

Qixing Mountain, the park’s highest peak, is a testament to this activity. Layers of volcanic ash and lava tell the story of its multiple eruptions, forming a beautiful conical stratovolcano. Shamao Mountain‘s dome shape comes from viscous lava, while the depressions on top of Shamao mountain are not craters but cooled lava shrinkage. Their uneven sides resemble an ancient official’s hat.

The vast, flat Qingtiangang Grassland is a result of extensive lava flows. It’s also the highest point on the Fish Road Ancient Trail, offering stunning views. Xiao Youkeng‘s volcanic breccia and ash house fumaroles and sulfur vents, spewing acidic gas that weakens the rock walls.

Finally, Zhutihu Lake was formed by a lava flow dam. Divided into three areas (East, Top, and Lower Lakes), it was named for the swaying bamboo that once covered the area, resembling waves on the lake’s surface.
